Staff Editor, Kotaku

New York, NY or Los Angeles, CA

G/O Media is the publisher of the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik, The Root, The Onion and The A.V. Club, and reaches over 100 million unique visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans.  We connect with the young, diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through fearless journalism, provoking comedy, and high-impact storytelling, we elevate the stories and issues our readers and viewers are passionate about.

About the Role:

A Kotaku Staff Editor should be excited to edit other people’s stories, working with our writers to sharpen ideas, sculpt copy, and generally help our writers’ work shine. Your job as staff editor will be to field many of the staff’s game reviews, investigative reports, cultural essays, and occasional silly lists, working with the writers to improve them and get them on the page. You will edit several stories a day, some meant to be turned around same-day, others in edits for a week or more. While your name won’t be on most of the posts you work on, your influence will be felt throughout the site. This is indeed an editing job, not a writing one, though you can write from time to time.

While a love of gaming is important, equally important is a love of editing and of working with writers and other editors to bring true stories and genuine critique to an audience of millions. We aim to satisfy readers and at times challenge them, and hope you’re eager to as well.

This is an entry-level position in our editing team. We are open to applicants who can work in our New York City office or in Los Angeles.

As Staff Editor, you should:

  • have an interest in working with writers;
  • be comfortable editing copy quickly and cleanly;
  • be able to manage editing short-term and long-term stories;
  • be organized and detail-oriented;
  • be ambitious about Kotaku’s growth in both output and audience.

Please apply with a resume, cover letter, and answer the job-specific questions below.
